Set on a substantial central coral branch, and adorned with finely carved leaves, roses, and one beautiful calla lily, it also serves as a timeline of evolving pin styles, showing changes taking place because of shifts in fashion and a preference for thinner fabrics. Victorian era pins had thick, long pin stems, which protruded far beyond their catch, in order to properly anchor pins on thick fabrics. During the Edwardian era, fabrics became much lighter, with fine cottons, lace, and silks in fashion. This led to pin stems becoming noticeably thinner and shorter, as seen in this pin, which also has the very convenient addition of a removable bail, to convert it to a pendant. Calla lilies were an interesting symbol during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with an intriguing duality- they symbolized both purity and innocence, as well as being used to secretly convey lust and sexual desire. This charming little pin dates to the late 1800s, and while the coral itself certainly originated in Italy, the pin is very likely of German or Bohemian construction. Crafted in the form of a dainty floral spray, with a smaller flower bud and clusters of heart shaped silver leaves set with central coral "berries," this pin also holds a secretive, tiny seed pearl dewdrop at the very tip of the "cut" stem end. The addition of this tiny pearl, which would have required additional time, labor, and expense to set properly, along with the total number of 15 coral "berries," is a clue that this lovely little pin was made at a higher quality than the average tourist jewelry. The color, luster, and visible pits and inclusions within the coral "berries" are consistent with antique Sciacca coral (rare deposits of Mediterranean coral found off of the coast of Sciacca, Italy, in the 1870s, that consisted of naturally fossilized, broken coral branches brought to this location by underwater currents. The coral was notable for its lighter, often variegated colors and the presence of dark pits and marks. These deposits were depleted by the early 1900s), though I cannot verify with 100% certainty that it is in fact Sciacca material. This luscious example is carved from a deep orange-red Mediterranean coral, with some beads approaching a true oxblood red. This necklace dates to the first decade of the 20th century, a time when a darker red coral was considered incredibly desirable. There is a lovely spectrum of deep oranges and reds, with some beads approaching a true oxblood red. The beads show all of the hallmarks of hand carving, with charming irregularities and asymmetry.

This necklace is in excellent condition, and has been professionally restrung on period appropriate silk cord, with its original charming silver and marcasite clasp. All 5 marcasite are intact, and are bead-set instead of glued (which is common in marcasite jewelry after the 1920s). The necklace measures 18" long, with the smallest beads measuring 4 mm and the largest bead measuring 7 mm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/6978/8589/files/rn-image_picker_lib_temp_98bc6706-e0d4-4cf2-bc5a-28a607d3ba08.jpg?v=1786220274
