An exquisite example of 19th century "Grand Tour" jewelry, these striking and strange coral earrings were carved in Italy (likely in or near Naples) out of highly prized "Cerasuolo" coral. Translating to "cherry colored," Cerasuolo is not Mediterranean coral, but in fact a highly prized variety of Asian coral also known as Momo.
Carved in the form of Sphinxes, each with one wing outstretched, resting on top of Roman theater masks, they are a wonderful blend of ancient mythological references and the archeological revival craze of the Victorian era.
Each earring is hung from, and backed with, 18k gold. There is a "750" hallmark (denoting 18k purity), and a maker's mark, which is unfortunately no longer legible. I do not believe this to be the original setting, as other examples of this exact same style of earring show solid gold backs as opposed to a strip of gold. I believe these were re-set sometime during the early or mid 20th century.
Each carved coral piece measures 1" long. There is a hairline crack running through one carving, but it is cosmetic, and does not extend to the back of the piece.
