Another classic example of a Victorian era coral necklace, this time in a hand-carved "dogbone" shape in slightly graduated sizes. This style of bead, also known as hourglass shape, was incredibly popular from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s, and experienced a resurgence in popularity in Asian coral production during the 1960s and 1970s. Antique examples are easy to spot, because of their irregular, asymmetrical shapes and obvious hand carving. This particular necklace features a style of dogbone bead that retains more of the original coral branch's natural shape.
The necklace measures 16" long, and has been professionally restrung on silk cord. The necklace was fitted with a mismatched, modern clasp, which has been replaced with a vintage 14k gold spring ring clasp. It is in excellent condition, with a very even deep orange-red color and fantastic shine to the beads.
