This finely carved pendant is a delightful combination of neoclassical design, and the Victorian era obsession with flowers and the natural world. A beautifully proportioned, slightly flattened drop shape, it is carved with a spiraling pattern of grooves, flowers and leaves over a row of parallel bands topping an ancient Greek inspired acanthus leaf pattern. The drop terminates in a lovely floral finial.
The coral pendant is in excellent condition, although I do not believe that the gold plated bail and loop are original. They appear to be more modern additions, but I think the style of bail is well-matched to the patterns on the pendant. The pendant measures 1 3/8" long without the loop, and 7/16" at its widest point. The loop measures 1/4" long and can accommodate a chain up to 1/8" thick. There is a very small fissure/hole at the bottom finial, but this is not a flaw- it is a natural cavity that was present in the coral before carving.
