A perfect example of the naturalistic styles that were so prevalent during this era, this exquisitely carved coral leaf brooch dates back to around the 1850s. With beautifully curved, almost impossibly thin leaves, this level of craftsmanship is an excellent representation of the skills of the master coral carvers of the Naples/Torre Del Greco region of Italy. The coral shows a range of vivid and saturated orange tones, and is possibly of Sardinian origin. Likely purchased as a souvenir during a "Grand Tour," it is a highly sought after piece of Victorian era fashion.
This piece is not marked, but tests as 14k gold with lower karat gold solder. All of the coral leaves are in perfect condition, with no breaks or cracks, though a couple of bare "stems" seen on the back of the piece indicate that some leaves are missing. It is not noticeable from the front.
