Another classic example of a Victorian era coral necklace, this time in a hand-carved "dogbone" shape in graduated sizes. This style of bead, also known as hourglass shape, was incredibly popular from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s, and experienced a resurgence in popularity in Asian coral production during the 1960s and 1970s. Antique examples are easy to spot, because of their irregular, asymmetrical shapes and obvious hand carving. This particular necklace features a style of dogbone bead that retains more of the original coral branch's natural shape.
Necklace measures 16" long, and is in perfect condition. It fastens with its original barrel clasp, which is either incredibly low karat gold (under 9k) or, more likely, pinchbeck. It shines up beautifully and looks like solid karat gold.
