Arrows were a popular symbol of affection and devotion during the Victorian era, usually meant to reference Cupid's arrow. While I love sentimental jewelry of the 19th century, I am especially fond of the trend of wearing large arrow pins. The size and scale of these pieces is slightly jarring, challenging people's ideas about what sort of jewelry the average Victorian era woman might have worn. I have seen these arrow pins referred to as Scottish kilt pins, though those seem to have been smaller (and, often, more substantial and less dainty), and I have also seen similar engraved styles described as having been made in France. The last oversized arrow pin I had was set with Bohemian garnets, and likely came from Northern or Eastern Europe, so it seems these were popular throughout Europe and the UK. This beautifully engraved example is especially feminine, and I can easily imagine it being worn pinned to a bodice, shawl, or cloak as a reminder of someone's affection for the wearer. As you can see in the image of a fashionable Victorian woman, a large arrow pin like this would have been a rather playful accessory.
Pin is in excellent condition. It measures 4 7/8" long. It is not stamped, but tests as silver.
