Another charming example of the Victorian era buckle bracelet craze, this bangle features some of the hallmarks of this iteration of the trend (during the 1880s) such as an engraved ivy pattern, but also has a distinctive and unique scalloped buckle shape. It shows the influence of the burgeoning Aesthetic movement. Along with the engraved ivy pattern, there is a lovely engraved stylized leaf/palmette pattern bordering the "belt" portion of the bangle. This bracelet dates to the mid-to-late 1880s.
Bracelet is oval shaped, and measures 2.5" across the widest part (outside), 2.25" across (inside). It is 1" wide. It is in excellent condition for its age- there is a tiny bit of warping to the bangle where it clasps, so that the ends aren't completely flush when closed. It has minor surface scuffs, appropriate for an antique of this period. There is a bit of movement to the buckle portion, which seems to be intentional, as it is attached via a tube hinge.
Unlike British examples of bangle bracelets (and despite this bracelet having been purchased in England), it does not bear any hallmarks or maker's marks, indicating that it is likely American, or made in a British territory that was not subject to hallmarking regulations. It tests as sterling silver.
