Modern-day diamonds are generally expected to be perfect, with a bright white color, no visible inclusions, and a blindingly sparkling brilliant cut. This approach to diamonds is fairly modern, with the brilliant cut being a 20th century invention. Prior to this, diamonds came in a variety of charming, irregular, and sometimes slightly strange cuts (and often, colors). This beautiful trilogy ring is a great example of the transition in diamond trends- made during the very end of the 1800s or very early 1900s, it showcases not only two different cuts of diamond, but two entirely different colors. A bright old European cut diamond (the precursor to a modern brilliant cut) sits in the center, held in a yellow gold prong setting, and weighing approximately 0.3-0.35 carats. It is flanked by two incredibly unique diamonds, rose cuts in a triangular shape with a frosty greenish yellow hue, with a combined total weight of approximately 0.3-0.4 carats. These diamonds are not off-color, but are saturated enough to be visibly different from the central white diamond, and setting them in this ring was a conscious aesthetic choice, intended to highlight the different colors. The rose cut diamonds are set in white gold prong settings, helping to highlight their tone and color. The cool greenish yellow color is what I would call "jonquil," though this is by no means an official industry term. This ring was most likely custom made for someone, possibly using older heirloom stones for the rose cuts, and is of French origin- it is stamped with a French eagle hallmark (in use since 1838), denoting 18k gold, as well as a small maker's mark that is, sadly, not entirely decipherable. There is no evidence of re-tipped prongs or replaced settings, which makes me fairly confident that this ring has not been altered, and is original.
