This hefty, beautifully cut onyx and gold mourning brooch dates to the mid 19th century, likely during the 1860s. Black onyx was a popular material for jewelry worn during the mourning period, and this style of carved, faceted beads was especially desirable. Warm, rosy 14k gold creates the perfect, luminous counterpoint to the glossy shine of onyx.
In absolutely wonderful condition, with very minor surface pits which are not easily visible without magnification. Gold is unmarked, but tests at 14k purity. This is a substantial pin, weighing quite a bit due to the density of onyx, and is unsuitable for delicate fabrics.
Brooch measures 2.75" long, with the largest faceted onyx dangle measuring 0.5"
