In the not-so-distant past, "amateur archeologist" was a viable profession for enthusiastic men who had too much money. Enter Heinrich Schliemann, a German "archeologist" who leaned heavily on the "amateur" part. Obsessed with the idea of finding the mythical city of Troy, he actually did, but ended up blasting through thousands of years of archeological record with dynamite in an effort to find the version of Troy that best fit his grandiose expecations. A true Victorian era chaos goblin, Heinrich Schliemann is remembered not only for the things the found, but the things he destroyed, as well.
